find the value of the following without using a calculator:
992 - 1
and
662 - 342

Couldn't you split the squared part up, e.g. 99^2 = (100-1)^2, then multiply out the brackets for them.

99² – 1 = (99 + 1)(99 – 1) = 100 × 98 = 9800

Yeh, or you could do that, it seems easier anyway. :)
